World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about yourself.
I’m currently working at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and I absolutely enjoy being part of psychological research for the well-being of our soldiers. I also work with children that have Autism and it’s extremely rewarding!
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.
I started competing when I was 17. My first pageant was Miss Maryland Teen USA where I placed 2 nd Runner Up. I was hooked and I have kept competing since! I have been fortunate enough to represent Maryland at two National pageants and the wonderful city of College Park, MD, where I attending college.
World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?
I grew up watching pageants with my mom since I was a child. Watching those women compete with such poise, confidence, and intelligence was so inspiring and I knew I had to be part of it!
World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?
I consider myself to be more than just a beauty queen or titleholder and the Miss Earth United States Organization gave me a platform to voice my concern for global environmental issues. Now more than ever, it’s important for people to stand up for causes and think critically about the world around us. I knew this organization would be a great medium for me to do just that and encourage others to do so as well.
World Class Beauty Queens: To those unfamiliar with your pageant system please tell us what is it about?
Miss Earth United States is part of the international Miss Earth system based in the Philippines. Delegates are passionate about environmental issues and our mother Earth! At the international level, there are even elemental titles awarded to the runner ups such as Miss Earth Fire and Miss Earth Air.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are you being judged on during the competition?
At the national level, delegates are judged on traditional phases such as evening gown, interview, and on-stage question. Additionally, there is a runway competition sponsored by Mac Duggal, a public speaking portion, and a delegate video that showcases the individual’s journey and advocacy.
World Class Beauty Queens: How was your experience during the competition.
The national competition was so much fun! We were able to tour D.C. and clean up the National Mall. We had sponsored photo shoots, encouraging talks with Miss Earth and fabulous other titleholders, and learned even more about the activism of each of the state titleholders. It was inspiring to meet so many accomplished young women who were biochemists, lawyers, actresses, and many other wonderful and meaningful careers.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your platform or what cause do you volunteer for.
My platform Aware With Yashvi is definitely a play on words since my last name is Aware! I wanted to find fun and simple ways other people could add environmentally friendly changes in their lifestyle. I talked about easy hacks.
World Class Beauty Queens: What appearances have you done with your title?
One of the most memorable appearances was Earth Day in D.C. where I got to learn about space with the help of NASA! Interacting with children and talking to them about the importance of Earth Day was really special. I was also able to plant trees with some local titleholders for Arbor Day in Howard County. We planted trees in pouring rain! We were dedicated to our mission and not a lot of titleholders can say they’ve done something similar but that’s just what being a Miss Earth US titleholder is about.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are some of you achievements?
I received a $60,000 academic scholarship for undergraduate studies because of my high GPA and SAT scores. In total, I have won over $30,000 in scholarship through pageantry!
World Class Beauty Queens: What is your onstage strategy to win the judges over?
Being the best version of yourself comes off genuine and that’s exactly what I strive to do on stage. I want to look like I’m having fun, which is exactly why I compete in pageants to begin with.
World Class Beauty Queens: What makes you stand out from all those other beautiful girls?
I compete with so many beautiful and accomplished girls! We’re each unique but I think I’m very relatable and I want to be able to meet with and speak to people from all walks of life and learn about them.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did it feel to hear your name as the winner?
I was ecstatic! I’ve been in the top five so many times and finally winning is such a great experience because I worked really hard for this title. It reinforced that hard work pays off.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?
It means so much more than being physically attractive. Letting my inner beauty and the kindness of my heart show is what I strive to always do because that’s how I want to be remembered.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants helped your life?
Pageants have given me so many friendships. Some of my oldest friends are girls that I’ve actually competed against! I’ve received an incredible support system, so many opportunities to expand other interests, and so many incredible women to look up to.
World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?
It feels like I have a very important job! Having great role models are essential to helping young women grow up to be confident and successful. I feel that I have a responsibility to continue being a positive influence for others and I am passionate about that.
World Class Beauty Queens: What have you learned from practicing your walk?
Walking with confidence is important in all aspects of life, not just pageantry. I’ve learned to carry that confidence with me everywhere and it’s helped me a lot!
World Class Beauty Queens: What have you learned from choosing the dress for the competition?
I learned about dressing for your body type and enhancing your best features. This applies to so many different things. I always try to remind myself to be positive and not think about the things I’d want to change about myself or may feel insecure about because that can be really destructive.
World Class Beauty Queens: What have you learned from the interview portion of the competition?
I love watching the news and staying up to date on current events so that was never difficult for me. I’ve learned how to speak to people that I’ve never met before and talk openly about myself and the things I’m most passionate about. This has carried over into my career and academic pursuits as well.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2018 as a Queen?
I hope this coming year is full of pageants for me! I will be starting graduate school next fall so I won’t have a lot of time to compete. I am already missing the fun appearances and activism pageantry has allowed me to take part in but I will continue that work even when I am not a titleholder.
World Class Beauty Queens: What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
I want to leave a legacy of inclusion and encouragement. Recently, there has been so much diversity present in pageants and it’s amazing to see that. As an Indian-American, there have been a lot of stigmas and stereotypes I’ve had to overcome and I want to continue seeing girls from different walks of life, different shapes, and cultures to continue competing as I recently have witnessed. Through my platform and community service, I worked to encourage others to take an active role in this world and I hope to see that even more.
